EX-NHL DEFENCEMAN TO COACH TERRIERS; HOTHAM SERVED AS ASSISTANT WITH JUNIOR TEAM IN 04-05
Orillia, June 3, 2008
ORILLIA, On. –The Jim Wilson Couchiching Terriers will enter the 2008-09 season with higher expectations, and general manager Roy Micks said he believes Greg Hotham is the man to lead the team to the top of the division.
Hotham, an assistant coach with the team in 2004-05, was named the Terriers new head coach Friday.
The 52-year-old had a 13-year professional hockey career that included 230 games in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins between 1979 and 1985. The defenceman scored 15 goals and added 74 assists.
Other than his stint with the Terriers a few years ago, Hotham has never coached at the Junior "A" level, but has coached "AAA" teams in minor hockey in Barrie.
Hotham has also worked in broadcasting with the Barrie Colts and is the father of two successful junior hockey players.
Andrew and Scott Hotham, who enjoyed careers with the Terriers and the Barrie Colts, now play for St. Mary's University in Halifax.
Micks said Hotham's experience in hockey makes him a good fit.
"We're pretty happy to have Greg. He has helped us out before and, with his background, it adds some credibility to our organization," said Micks.
Hotham, a Barrie resident, said he's been looking for the right opportunity to get into coaching at the Junior "A" level.
"I've known Roy for a number of years, both my boys played here and the league isn't foreign to me, so it seemed like a good fit," said Hotham.
Assistant coach and director of player personnel Dylan Seca will take a year off from his duties behind the bench, as his wife is expected to give birth. The rest of the team's coaching staff will remain the same.
Assistant coach Randy Salmon said he was happy to hear Hotham would be leading the team.
"His kids play the same style as my kids do," said Salmon, who described that style as "aggressive, but not stupid."
"Aggressive on the forecheck, but, obviously, responsible in your own end," said Salmon. "I'd like to see our team be a better forechecking team and have more than one or two guys taking the body."
Hotham said he doesn't really have a coaching style and that he will coach to the team's strengths.
